DIY NETWORK

THIS OLD BATHROOM

DESIGNED BY ME...

Kira and Nate wanted to give their 100 year old bathroom a updated modern look but keeping with the vintage feel of the home.

Starting with the floor, I chose a cork flooring but in a penny round, new 'green' product with the cork but the old world charm of the penny rounds.  Found at http://www.habitusnyc.com/

Cork Mosaic Floor Tile

I had a custom vanity built from  http://www.alscabinetsinc.com/home to fit the gorgeous apron sinks - For the doors of the vanity I got 2 ornate  ceiling and applied them to the front doors.  A great detail with little money and less effort.   Think outside the box!

Apron sinks are rarely seen in a bathroom but why not!  Great charm and looks fantastic! http://www.vintagetub.com/

Belle Foret Apron Front Kitchen Sink

The countertops are made of paper!  You heard me right - PAPER! Richlit's unique paper surfaces bring a soft and comfortable ambience to a room.  It's made from environmentally sustainable resources and is an attractive, durable, long-lasting material that complements a variety of design tastes.  Found at   http://www.alscabinetsinc.com/home

I wanted to give them more storage on the other side of the room from the vanity I had a storage unit built and again added the ornate ceiling tiles to the door fronts!  Great detail for little cost.

I also added a sitting area - new lamp and custom shade from www.tackyshade.com   A few other accessories and good to go!

********** what a statement on the wall!  If you wanted to save more money, use the stone as a backsplash.  This particular flat pebble stone I selected can be found http://marketplace.diynetwork.com/Product.aspx?Lid=4598-901128&from=diy, a bit of a pain to grout (so the homeowners say) but looks fantastic!

'YOU'RE INVITED' TO A HOLIDAY PARTY!

Untitled

BEFORE AND AFTER
The before as you can see is a very plain 4 season porch. I thought, why not here - it could be a very cozy room for 6! Perfect!
Neutral colors - perfect backdrop.  The colors I chose are fresh and modern.  Bright green, vibrant blue, lots of silver and a splash of red.  All I had to do was switch out the furniture!  I added a thick green ribbon on the sides of the curtains to bring in color to the walls - instead of painting!
Brought in the dining room table, chairs and a bench!
******* Remember layers adds great interest to a table.  First a neutral table cloth, 1 1/2 yards of accent green fabric cut into thirds for table runners placed on the shorter length of the table.  then a glitter blue ribbon placed along the sides of the green fabric for detail.
Next the plates - Silver chargers I bought at last years holiday clearance, next a accent blue paper napkin placed across the plate.  (saved money on not buying cloth)
*******Everyone should have a set of white basic plates they work with any tablescape!
For more interest and individuality I took brown paper and cut out a scroll design and the initial of each guests name, placed them on the white plate.  To see the design I placed a clear plate on top then a smaller clear plate over that and then a silver party cracker to start the evening with a pop!
********  Second hand store is a great place to find silver serving pieces.  I got a great deal, I found cute small silver wine glasses, what a steal for 1.00 each, next to that I placed individual bottles of champagne, clear stemware for water.  For the center of the table I used strands of silver beads, silver balls and a few glitter red berries.
Lastly, very holiday table needs candles for that sparkly ambiance!
Everyone looks better in candlelight and after a few glasses of vino....

I have a ceiling fan with a very ugly dome light.  What an eyesore it was!  I got the tacky shade http://www.tackyshades.com/  self adhesive - drum 16"x16"x8" shade.  Covered it in a neutral fabric and applied (silver shelving paper bought at Lowes) cut out a coordinating scroll design from plate, pealed off the backing and pressed it to the fabric.
Ikea chandelier held with wires to the shade secures the two together.  More wire tied from the shade to the ceiling light base a - custom looking shade - all for under 40.00.

The beverage table is kept very simple - tone on tone, I wanted the large dining table to be the focal point.  First I used a neutral tablecloth, inexpensive silver strand of beads and different sized silver balls is all this tablescape needed.   Beautiful stemware from Chef's Gallery in Stillwater or regular wine glasses are fine.  Simple, clean and elegant.

Here are ornaments that I made!  I am not a crafter so I was amazed that I was able to make 8 of these!  The focal point in the room is the large span of windows. They looked awfully bare and needed a punch of sparkle.  I found an ornament that looks just like these at a store for 16.00.  Thrifty crazy lady that I am - I thought -I can make this and for less - it ended up costing only a buck an ornament!
With some thick paper, styrofoam balls, glitter, glue and some wire, I created these beautiful large hanging ornaments! A bit time consuming but so easy!  For the other windows I hung larger silver ball ornaments tied with brown ribbon at different heights for interest.  Inexpensive but just the right amount of sparkle.

Designing for a new show airing Spring 2010!

Finally, something different than designing bathrooms!  Yes!
How many different toilets are there? You think possibly two or three - nooooo - there is single flush, double flush, tankless, taller seated, quite flush, self cleaning, cushioned seats, heated seats, sensor flush, bidet, urinal who knew!?!  ok enough!

The new show will be on DIY and it is with a new host!  We just started production last week with demolition and now the fun starts, seeing my design come to life and no biffy's!!!
Filming Wed and hopefully some of the product has arrived- there are some great innovative products I got to use in my design and can't wait to see it!

(you want to go on line and see how many more biffys there are out there don't ya!)

Zen Tablescape for 4!

This particular tablescape is from a presentation I gave a few years back.

As you can see it is a simple scape but a timeless look!

ZEN - think earthy, warm and simple!

*******Back drop, the wooden table, if you don't have a wooden table, use a tan or light brown table cloth.

I didn't want the table to be too drab so I added just a little sparkle with the mosaic candle votives and 2 hanging strands of shells and glass.  (girls gotta have a little sparkle!!!!!!!)

Keep it all simple and clean but must have layers!

First the reed place mats, wooden square plate, ceramic bowl and take out container place in the center.

4 side small round ceramic bowls for ginger soy dipping sauce.  2 Round ceramic bowls with spices for guests to season on their own.

Ceramic cup and silverware, not too much on the table - remember less is more for that "zen feel"

The centerpiece I used this beautiful mosaic vase with rustic branches.  I love the sparkle with the earthy elements - not too much but just enough!

The take out containers I bought at my local restaurant, asked to buy 6 & they only charged me $2.00!

I stenciled the front of the container with latex paint, placed the napkin in side the container with chopstix.

Fortune cookie placed in the center with guest name &  sent home left overs with the guests!

Untitled

I added a few smooth black rocks which looks great with a little sparkle.

**** Instead of having to buy table decorations, use the gifts for your guests.

A tea box and a hand lotion set tied together with a piece of reed of grass sits at each place setting.

******  Keep it with in the color scheme, be creative & think outside the box, you don't need to spend alot of money!
